In a survival situation, conserve valuable resources like waterproof matches by attempting to start camp fires using a butane lighter or flint and steel striker with available naturally-occurring tinder and kindling. Butane lighters must be warmed before using in low temperatures and may be difficult to ignite in high altitudes.

Select dead branches, loose bark (birch or cedar) and dried grasses. Avoid timber lying on the ground that has absorbed moisture. It will be difficult to ignite.
